FAQ
What hours and days is the gym open?
We’re here for you from Monday to Friday 10am – 9pm and Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays 10am – 7pm
Do I need to book to attend the climbing gym?
No need to book! Only if you’re coming with a large group (8 or more people) you should book by writing to info@aucklandclimb.co.nz with at least 2 days’ notice so we’re ready to attend to everyone. You can make the process of arriving as a group run more smoothly by completing a Safety Waiver in advance.
Does the gym rent climbing shoes?
We do! We have plenty of climbing shoes for rent from EU 37.5/US 5.5/UK 4.5 to EU 50/US 15/UK 14 for only $5.
We also have climbing shoes for sale, you can see them in our shop.
What do I need to climb?
The only mandatory thing is to have climbing shoes. If you don’t have your own, you can rent some here for just $5
Do I need chalk to climb?
The use of chalk is optional but recommended as it increases friction between your hands and the holds. We have a range of chalk available to buy in store and online as well as rental chalk available for $3
What should I wear to climb?
We recommend comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely – sportswear is advised but not mandatory. We recommend for your safety and for the integrity of the pieces to remove all jewelry. We also ask that you keep your shirts on while climbing.
What type of climbing can I do at the gym?
This gym only does boulder climbing, our walls are 4.5m maximum with large cushioned mats to support you falling safely, so no need for ropes or harnesses.
What should I do before my first time visiting the gym?
We ask everyone that climbs with us to fill out the Safety Waiver. You can also do this here in the gym, we have a computer and WiFi if you want to do it on your phone.
Do you teach people that have never climbed before?
If it’s your first time at ACG we’ll do an induction that will show you how to fall safely from the wall, we’ll also show you how our grading system and the climbing routes work.
If it’s your first time ever climbing, we’ll give you some tips and we’ll be checking every once in a while (according to our availability and acuity of the gym) how you’re doing and help you if you need it.
For climbing classes check our website and social media.
Can I go see my friends climb?
No problem! If you just want to come and watch, you’re welcome free of charge. We have a comfortable sofa area upstairs where you can relax with a hot drink and watch some climbing videos or chat with our friendly staff. We also have a picnic table in the gym area where you can take hot drinks down to watch your friends!
Can I go with my dog?
We love dogs here in ACG! Just as long as they behave, don’t go on the mats and they don’t mind climbers trying to cuddle them, there’s no problem. Please bring your cleaning kit if they’re losing hair.
I want to come by car, is parking available?
Absolutely! Even with our central location parking isn’t an issue, we have free underground parking available free to use, we just ask that you log your plates at reception. The entrance to the car park is at 135 Newton Road, right where the Auckland Climbing Gym and Ludus Magnus signs are. Here’s a map.
Do the bouldering routes get changed often?
We change a set of problems on a weekly basis (excluding holiday weeks). We currently have 12 zones in the gym and one of these will be updated each time – giving you ample time to work on your project and something fresh each week. This means the entire gym will have a fresh reset every two months, providing you new projects and exciting problems.
How long can we climb for?
Our day pass includes the whole day, so you’re welcome to stay for as long as you like. Some people just come for a quick 20 minute climb, others like to spend most of the day here, it’s as your energy levels and enthusiasm permit.
Do you have restrictions or supervision guide?
All young climbers under the age of 12 require supervision from an adult.
For the moment our gym doesn’t have a kid’s area so we are unable to facilitate climbing for those under seven years of age.
Can I cancel or pause my membership?
Yes, you can! But as our Terms and conditions state here, you will have to send an email to info@aucklandclimb.co.nz explaining why you need to pause or cancel your membership, we’ll evaluate your situation and give you an answer.
